IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMACULTURE AND ORGANIC FARMING?

We all know, organic agriculture is a much better option than the conventional farming system.

Yes, there is. Permaculture isn’t just organic farming but a much broader concept than organic farming. Most often people are puzzled when it comes to distinguishing between these two because there are some similarities but on the other hand, there are some noticeable differences too.

As long as a chemical application in crops is restricted, they are included under organic farming, as preference given to the avoidance of synthetic fertilizer application. Whereas a permaculture is a holistic approach where not just the application of synthetic products are avoided but actually it’s an art of creating a balanced ecosystem.

PERMACULTURE IS OFTEN CALLED LAZY FARMING. WHY??

In organic farming, tillage practice is done in order to lose soil for aeration purposes and for the application of manures. In permaculture, in lieu of tilling, the field is dug once a year and simply conservative and enlightening components like mulch and in-situ compost are added.

Permaculture emphasizes perennials varieties rather than annuals so that crops to harvest doesn’t need to be sown or nourished year after year.

In organic farming, we could use various artificial irrigation systems like a sprinkler, drip irrigation using hoses or underground pipes. In contrast, we use rainwater by simply utilizing rainwater catchments like swales and ponds in permaculture.

For controlling pests, we spray organic compounds in organic farming. In permaculture, for controlling the pests, we create an ecosystem like grow varieties of plants and do mix-cropping or intercropping, which will entice and feed beneficial insects and beneficial insects, in turn, will control the population of harmful insects.

Three ethics of permaculture are:-
1-Care for the earth
2-Care for people
3-Fair Share

Permaculture aims to harvest and enhance natural sources like water, sun, wind, bird droppings etc. In fact, it provides nutritious food not only to humans but also food and shelter to animals, birds as whole living beings. So, why don’t we promote and commence permaculture from now on??
